jbs progas® has been developed by the world's leading manufacturer of lactic acid bacteria: Chr. Hansen, Denmark. It is an efficient silage additive optimizing the fermentation of energy crops.
Fermentation losses inevitably occur in each fermentation. In addition to these, yeasts will metabolize valuable carbohydrates into volatile components such as CO2 or ethanol during storage. jbs progas® protects a huge amount of energy by accelerating the fermentation (in the initial phase) and inhibiting yeasts (during storage). Thus, jbs progas® saves approx. 50 % of DM losses, consequently providing more feed for your methanogenic bacteria.
In addition to efficiently producing lactic acid, jbs progas® is able to inhibit yeasts, thus improving the silage‘s stability without producing acetic acid in the process.

Reasons for using jbs progas®
- increases methane yield by 12.9%
(trials conducted at Leipniz-Institut für Agrartechnik Potsdam-Bornim e.V. in 2008)
- contains homofermentative bacteria (formation of lactic acid only)
- improves digestibility if used in dairy farming
- reduces DM losses
- lowers the pH
- increases the silage's energy content
- speeds up fermentation
- inhibits yeasts
- reduces the risk of heating after opening
- reduces the risk of fungal growth and decomposition
- reduces losses caused by surface or top spoilage
- reduces losses at the cutting surface
- wide spectrum of applications

Reduces DM losses: leaves more energy for the digester*
* and more energy for dairy cows: Unlike many other silage additives for biogas plants, jbs progas® has been approved for dairy cow feeding and improves both the silage's palatability and digestibility
CEDAR, University of Reading, R. Phipps Maize silage, approx. 39% DM: savings of 18.3 kg DM/t forage of sugar and starch compared to untreated (DM losses untreated: 5.4 %, treated: 0.7%) + 18.3 kg DM/t forage |
CEDAR, University of Reading, R. Phipps Maize silage, approx. 29% DM: savings of 4.4 kg DM/t forage of sugar and starch compared to untreated (DM losses untreated: 8.2 %, treated: 6.7%) + 4.4 kg DM/t forage |
Landwirtschaftsinstitut Schleswig-Holstein, J. Thaysen Maize silage, approx. 41% DM: savings of 5.7 kg DM/t forage of sugar and starch compared to untreated (DM losses untreated: 8.7%, treated: 7.3%) + 5,7 kg DM/t forage |
Washington State University, J. Harrison Maize silage, approx. 35% DM: savings of 24.5 kg DM/t forage of sugar and starch after 2 weeks of fermentation (DM losses untreated: 20%, treated: 13%) + 24,5 kg DM/t forage |
Profitability (electric): per kg carbohydrates* (sugar, starch) per kg lactic acid* per kg acetic acid* = 1.4 kWh |

Average DM savings in kg/t forage
(average DM: 35 %) jbs progas® saves an average 13.2 kg DM of carbohydrates/t forage! This represents a current value of 2.97 €! + thermal exploitation + reduced losses at the cutting surface
