Homofermentative against yeasts

After extensive research scientists have concluded that a biological silage additive should contain homofermentative lactic acid bacteria to achieve the best results, as these bacteria are able to convert sugar 2 to 6 times more effectively than heterofermentative bacteria.

However, high quality silage which is high in sugar, is also susceptible to heating caused by aerobic deterioration. When air enters the silo, yeasts start wasting sugar and cause a rise in pH and temperature. These apparent losses are a matter of common knowledge on the farm. However, even in silos that have not been opened yet, yeasts break down sugar. Though these partly huge losses stay normally unnoticed.

Anaerobic fermentation of fructose and glucose
by homo- and heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria

Source: „The Biochemistry of Silage“

1. Homofermentative lactic acid bacteria
(e. g. Lactobacillus plantarum, Pediococcus pentosaceus)

  • 1 glucose (or 1 fructose) 2 lactic acid
    Efficiency: 100%

2. Heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria
(e. g. Lactobacillus buchneri resp. brevis)

  • 1 glucose 1 lactic acid + 1 ethanol + 1 CO2
    Efficiency: 50%
  • 3 fructose 1 lactic acid + 2 mannitol + 1 acetic acid + 1 CO2
    Efficiency: 16,7%

Chr. Hansen found the answer to the above mentioned problem. The following yeasts were determined to be the main causer of heating through aerobic deterioration and losses of nutrients in silages:

  • Pichia fermentans
  • Candida krusei (Dr. Muck)
  • Candida krusei (ATCC)
  • Pichia anomala
  • Rhodotorula mucilaginosa
After more then 5 years of research and development and after testing more than 100 bacterial strains, two homofermentative Lactobacillus plantarum-strains have been selected for Biomax® 5. These strains inhibit mentioned yeasts during fermentation, storage and after opening the silo.

Biomax® 5 is the perfect choice for crops high in carbohydrates such as grass, whole platn silage and maize silages of 20 % to 70% DM.

Features and benefits

  • homofermentative
  • inhibits yeasts
  • produces a lot of lactic acid
  • rapididly lowers the pH-value
  • reduces DM and nutrient losses before and after opening
  • prolongs the stability of the silage after opening
  • less costs per tonne of forage
  • FAMI-QS-certified
  • available in:
20 kg bag (granulates), enough for 100 tonne silage,
500 g jar (concentrate), enough for 500 tonne silage,
100 g jar (concentrate), enough for 100 tonne silage.

Decleration of Absence of GMOs

  1. No genetically modified raw material is used for the production of the natural micoroorganisms in Biomax® 5.
  2. The microorganisms used are natural microorganisms that have not been genetically modified or engineered by DNA technology.
  3. The carrier contained is not genetically modified.
